How importing works
Bring in the book you’ve already started, and your notes. You see everything before anything is saved.
What you can bring in
| Your manuscript | Your notes | A spreadsheet | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comes in as | Chapters | Characters, places and more | Characters, places and more |
| From | Word (.docx), or pasted text | Word (.docx), or pasted text | Excel (.xlsx) or CSV |
| One for each | Chapter heading, or every heading | Heading, or list item | Row |
Files can be up to 5 MB. Writing in Google Docs or Sheets? Download the file as Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx) or CSV, then bring that file in.
Bringing in your manuscript
- Open Import.
In Write, choose Import a manuscript at the top of the chapter list. Import characters and places in World opens the same screen.
- Bring the file in.
Drop a .docx onto the page, or choose Browse files. Or choose Paste text instead, paste, and choose Continue. Pasting? Start each chapter with a line like “Chapter 1” or “Prologue”.
- Check it’s read as chapters.
Kronicler guesses what the file is. If it guessed wrong, change Import as to Chapters.
- Choose where it splits.
Split at: Chapter headings cuts at “Chapter 1” or “Prologue” and keeps any other headings inside the chapter. Every heading cuts at each heading in the file. Untick any chapter you don’t want.
- Pick your names.
Under Names, Kronicler lists the names that recur in your prose, how often each appears, and a line where it does. Untick any that aren’t real, and set each one’s kind. Names already in your world aren’t added twice.
- Import.
Choose Import. When it’s done, you’ll see how many chapters and new names came in. The new chapters wait under Unfiled in the chapter list.
When it’s done, choose Find where your characters appear together. Kronicler lists the passages where two of your people share a scene and nothing’s marked yet. Record what changes, or skip.
Bringing in your notes
- Bring the file in.
A .docx, or pasted text, on the same Import screen.
- Set Import as to Characters and places.
If Kronicler read your notes as chapters, change Import as.
- Check the entries.
Each heading becomes one entry, and the text under it becomes its description. If the file has bulleted or numbered lists, each list item becomes an entry instead.
- Give each one a kind.
Character, Place, Faction, Item, Event or Creature. Untick any you don’t want, then choose Import.
Bringing in a spreadsheet
- Put one entry on each row.
Name the columns in the first row, for example Name, Type, Description and Aliases.
- Bring the file in.
An .xlsx or a .csv, on the same Import screen.
- Check the columns.
Kronicler matches each column for you. To change one, choose Edit next to “columns matched” and pick Name, Type, Also known as, Description, Tag or Don’t import.
- Check the rows.
Each row takes its kind from the Type column. Change any that are wrong, untick any you don’t want, then choose Import.
Changed your mind?
You can undo any import for 30 days. Choose Undo import when it finishes, or find it later in Settings.
If something looks wrong
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| “Couldn’t read this file” | Kronicler reads Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx) and CSV files. From Google Docs or Sheets, download one of those first. |
| Too few or too many chapters | Change Split at: Chapter headings if your headings are loose, Every heading if each chapter has its own heading. |
| Your notes came in as chapters | Change Import as to Characters and places. |
| “Nothing to import” | Notes need a heading or a list item for each entry. If the file is prose, set Import as to Chapters. |
| Pasted text came in as one chapter | Start each chapter on its own line with “Chapter 1”, “Chapter 2” or “Prologue”, then paste again. |
